Next Week’s Division Championships

Brain-UrlacherAs the Super Bowl looms ahead, the oldest rivalry in the NFL is rekindled with the Chicago Bears set to battle Green Bay for a trip to the Super Bowl. The teams have only competed against each other in the playoffs once before- in 1941.

“It’s a big deal, we have a lot of history with them,” said Brian Urlacher, Bears linebacker. “We don’t like them, they don’t like us.” The first meeting between the teams, in 1921, resulted in a fist fight. The Bears coach Lovie Smith said “It just doesn’t get any better the way I see it then for the NFC Championship to come down to the Packers coming down on our turf. The Packers and Bears to finish it up. That’s how it should be.”

Meanwhile, in the AFC, the New York Jets are headed to battle Pittsburgh for the championship after an incredible (and rather shocking) victory over the New England Patriots. The Jets played a superior defensive game, playing back and covering receivers, forcing Brady into corners and sacking him five times.
Rex Ryan assessed the game results and said “I was dead wrong. I thought it would come down to me and Belichick and thank goodness it never did because he won that battle like he always does. It came down to our players and it came down to the assistant coaches and we won that battle. You can’t just give them one thing all the time. Mix your coverages, mix your blitzes, mix your pressures. Against these great quarterbacks, that’s what you have to do… against Peyton Manning at Indy and now Tom Brady at New England. Mission impossible. Now on to round three of mission impossible.” And indeed, Tom Brady and Wes Welker both praised Ryan and the Jets for their mixed tactics after the game. Now, the Jets are readying themselves for another tough battle against the Steelers next week.

The Bruins’ Unbelievable Comeback; Bryant and the Lakers Sweep New York

Boston-BruinsThe Boston Bruins made an incredible comeback against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday, scoring four goals in the final four minutes of the game, ending it with a 4-2 win. Zdeno Chara, Brad Marchand, Mark Recchi and Gregory Campbell all contributed goals to the final score. This was Boston’s second consecutive victory over the penguins. During the first they scored five goals in the third period to climb out of a deficit and end the game at 7-4. “Our last time here it was the same result- so we knew we could do it. We just had to believe in ourselves, and we did,” said Recchi. “Our coach gave us a good talk before the game. We have to build and make this process go well throughout the year.”

The LA Lakers swept the New York Nicks at their home court on Sunday, ending the game with a 109-87 win. Kobe Bryant scored 27 points and had ten rebounds, while Pau Gasol added 20 points and 14 rebounds of his own. Lamar Odem contributed 13 points and 18 rebounds. “We played good team defense and took them out of their comfort zones,” he said. “We just tried to play hard tonight and play a tough game. We were able to do that and get the win.”

Wildcard Weekend Part II

In last night’s games the Baltimore Ravens crushed the Kansas City Chiefs 30-7. Chief’s quarterback Matt Cassel threw three interceptions, helping the Ravens run up the score with two touchdowns and two field goals. During the season, the AFC North rivals played two games against each other, Baltimore winning the first, and Pittsburgh the second. “It’s going to be like it always is- a big physical football game, a lot of fun to play in and a lot of fun to watch,” said Joe Flacco, Baltimore’s quarterback. Cassel, quarterback for the Chiefs, said after the game “this one hurts, it really does sting. I felt going into the game that we had a great chance to win. We had a great week of practice and it really came down to the second half and turnovers… and it starts with me.”

The Eagles were taken down 21-16 by Green Bay, much to the dismay of Philadelphia. They missed two field goals, and almost won during the last few seconds but quarterback Michael Vick’s touchdown pass was intercepted in the end zone. “We’re just getting started,” said the Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy. “We just won a big football game here against a championship-caliber program and we have an opportunity to go to Atlanta to play the number one seed down there.” The Eagles’ quarterback strained an ankle on a sack in the fourth quarter. “The last play, I took a shot at the end zone,” he said. “I could have checked it down to the back and I got greedy and took a shot at the end zone. I didn’t throw the right ball I wanted to throw and it got picked off. It was a bad way to go out, but I went out swinging.”

Wildcard Weekend Part I

Mark-SanchezJets fans and rivals have both had serious doubts regarding the team and sophomore quarterback Mark Sanchez over the past two years. However, last night’s game showed that the players were not about to concede to the common conception. Both the Jets and the Colts played a tight game. When the score was 16-14 to the Colts with 53 seconds left, it looked like the game might be over. Sanchez, despite his modest accomplishments throughout the games, refused to let it end and engineered a perfect drive, putting Nick Folk within range and allowing him to kick a 32-yard field goal just as time expired, sealing the game at 17-16. “It’s a ‘got to have it’ play,” Sanchez said. “There are a few plays for every quarterback in their playbook.” He admitted that he would not have been able to make the pass last year.

The Seattle Seahawks shocked the New Orleans Saints 41-36 last night. New Orleans led with a 17-7 score during the second quarter, but gave up three touchdown passes and an incredible 67-yard rushing touchdown by Marshawn Lynch, ending their 2010 season. Seattle’s first-year head coach Pete Carroll said “I know it sounds crazy but we expected to win and so we will take this in stride and move to the next one. There was an electric atmosphere in the stadium and I guess in the whole city. Our players and fans played together today in a way that gave us a chance to beat a championship club. It was a great football game.”

Tonight, the Baltimore Ravens will play the Kansas City Chiefs and the Packers will battle the Eagles.

Celtics Win in NBA’s Best; Canucks Climbing Rapidly in the NHL

Manu GinobiliThe Boston Celtics were victorious in the battle of the NBA’s best on Wednesday, coming out 105-103 0ver the San Antonio Spurs. It was a truly close game, though, as Ray Allen led the Celtics to a 105-96 lead with less than a minute left. San Antonio scored seven consecutive points in those final seconds, but Manu Ginobili’s final 24-foot shot was blocked by Pierce. “You knew it was going to be a nip-tuck game pretty much all night,” Pierce said. “You got two heavyweights battling and it was fun to be a part of it. I’m just glad we won.”

The Vancouver Canucks are on a roll, ending Wednesday’s game at 3-1 over the Calgary Flames. Roberto Luongo finished with 43 saves, helping the Canucks win their seventh consecutive game, and upping their record to a league-best of 57 points. The Canucks are now 26-8-5. Ryan Kesler and Kevin Bieska scored goals during the first period, and Daniel Sedin added one in the second.

What’s New in the NBA?

The New York Knicks crushed the NBA-leading Spurs 128-115 on Tuesday. Wilson Chandler of the Knicks scored 31 points, while Amare Stoudemire and Raymond Felton each added 28 of their own to the score. New York started the game with an NBA-high average of 107.2 points per game. “We like to feel like we can match up with the best of them,” said Stoudemire. “So we feel like we’re right there, but we’ve got to play with some consistency and keep going all year.”

The Dallas Mavericks forward Caron Butler is out for the rest of the season because of knee surgery for a rupture to his right patellar tendon. Butler sustained the injury during Saturday’s game against Milwaukee, which Dallas lost 99-87. The exact statement was “He is expected to miss the remainder of the season.” Before his injury, Butler was averaging 15 points and 4.1 rebounds in 29 games.

James and Wade Team Up Against the Bobcats; Two Coach Changes in the NFL

LeBron James scored 26 of his 38 points during the second half of Miami’s game against the Charlotte Bobcats on Monday, helping his team reach a 96—82 victory. Dwayne Wade added 11 rebounds and 31 points to the Heat’s score. “The way we’re winning- we’re defending and everyone is involved in our offense. That’s good basketball,” James told reports after the game. This game was the first this season in which both James and Wade scored over 30 points. “I think they’re also getting a better idea of how to play off each other,” said their coach Erik Spoelstra. “I think they’re enjoying this new frontier, this new development in each of their games but it’s also making each one better and making it easier for one another.”

Two teams in the NFL have made some changes in their staff. First, the Cleveland Browns fired their head coach Eric Mangini after their ending their second consecutive 5-11 season. “Although we have made improvements this season, my responsibility is to ensure that we establish a program that will allow this team to compete at a championship level,” said the Browns president Mike Holmgren. “That will continue to be our goal in everything we do.”

Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings have removed the short-term tag on Leslie Frazier’s title, making him their permanent head coach. He had originally come in as a temporary replacement for Brad Childress. “We are thrilled that Leslie Frazier will continue to lead this football team,” said Zygi Wilf, Vikings owner. “Our players and entire organization have great respect for Leslie. He has a vast knowledge of the game, both as a former player and as a coach, and he has a terrific way with those who play for him and work with him. We are fortunate to have him as our head coach and look forward to many successful years together.”

The NFL Playoff Teams Are Set and Ready to Kick Off

Adam-Vinatieri1The Seattle Seahawks sealed the NFC West Division crown with a 16-6 victory of the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. The Seahawks are the first team to reach the playoffs with a losing record. “I always like doing things that have never been done and this is one of them,” said Seattle’s coach Pete Carroll. “We didn’t quite get here the way we dreamed of getting here, but we got here.”

The Indianapolis Colts took the AFC South title and a record-tying ninth consecutive trip to the post-season games with their 23-20 victory over the Tennessee Titans. The Colts’ Adam Vinatieri scored a 43-yard field goal as the time ran out, upping his team to third seed in the conference. Next week they will battle the New York Jets.

Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers clinched the AFC North and a first-round playoff bye with their 41-9 victory over the Cleveland Browns. “Mission accomplished,” said Mike Tomlin, the Steelers’ coach, after the game. “We came to Cleveland to claim the AFC North title and we got it done. Not a lot needed to be said about the stakes. It’s one less game we have to play to get where we want to go.”

The Jets have just achieved their best season record in twelve years (11-5), with their 38-7 win over the Buffalo Bills. The Jets rested many of their key players before next week’s first round of the playoffs, using their starting quarterback Mark Sanchez for only one drive. “That’s hard to get, hard to accomplish,” said Rex Ryan, the Jets’ coach. “We’re fresh, we’re healthy heading in there.” “This football team’s ready,” he added. “We want to win a Super Bowl and we want to do it right now.”

Washington Defeats Pittsburgh 3-1; The Spurs Victorious Over Nowitziki-less Mavericks

The Capitals-Penguins game started off with a 1-0 lead to Pittsburgh thanks to Evgeni Malkin, but the Capitals quickly retaliated with two goals of their own, made by Mike Knuble and Eric Fehr. The weather made the game even tougher than expected, with steady rain and unusually high temperatures. The NHL was forced to postpone the game by a few hours. The weather conditions improved just enough to allow the game to begin, although it ended in the driving rain. “We had an entertaining game and the crowd was terrific,” Gary Bettman, NHL commissioner told reporters. “The reality is when you take hockey outdoors, it becomes a little unpredictable.”

The San Antonio Spurs came out with a 99-93 victory over the Dallas Mavericks last Thursday. Without their leading scorer, Dirk Nowitziki, the Spurs had a significant advantage over their state rivals. The Spurs’ Gary Neal scored 21 points straight off the bench, helping San Antonio earn its thirteenth win in fourteen games. Before playing in his first NBA season, Neal spent a few years playing overseas. “Overseas was great for me. Playing there for three years, getting confidence and experience allowed me to be able to make shots and be comfortable to help the Spurs,” Neal explained.

The Latest in the NBA

Andrew-BynumThe Los Angeles Lakers came out with a much-needed 103-88 win over the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday. Lamar Odom scored 24 points straight off the bench, while Kobe Bryant scored 20 and Andrew Bynum contributed 18. Chris Paul of the Hornets led his team with 20 points and seven assists, but the Lakers, who are determined to win their third consecutive NBA title, flew to an 18-point lead at halftime and held the game from there.

Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics was injured during his team’s 104-92 loss to the Detroit Pistons this week. His x-rays were negative, and he is scheduled for an MRI. “I know it’s a muscle, not a knee, which is good,” said his coach. “I don’t know how severe it is or anything like that.” Despite being injury-riddled, the Celtics have the best record in the Eastern Conference (24-6).
