Rookie QB Leads Vikings to Victory; Miami Burns the New York Knicks

Minnesota’s rookie quarterback Joe Webb, during his first NFL start in place of Brett Favre, threw 195 without a single interception, and ran for a touchdown, leading his team to a shocking 24-14 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. After the game, Webb explained that “You always have to have composure as a quarterback.” He added that “you always have to show your teammates that you have confidence no matter the score. My teammates were rallying behind me the whole game and I have to give those guys credit.” The Vikings win was especially unexpected following the Eagles three-game winning streak and unbelievable comeback during their game against the New York Giants last week.

Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat scored 40 points during the game against the New York Knicks, ending the game at a 106-98 victory for Miami. The Heat’s Lithuanian center Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored twelve points and had nine rebounds during the first quarter, helping his team gain a 34-18 advantage. “I told Big Z he would have probably had a 28 point, 17-rebound game if he has a coach that would have put him back in there. He was able to be very effective and was able to play more minutes than we planned,” said Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra.

Saints to Appear in the Playoffs; Mavs Step Up Without Nowitziki

Dallas-MavericksThe New Orleans Saints have clinched a playoff spot with their 17-14 win over the NFC South Divison-leading Atlanta Falcons last night. Drew Brees of New Orleans threw consecutive interceptions in the fourth quarter, but he kept his cool and led his team to a 90-yard touchdown and a win. Brees told reporters after the game that “I was telling myself ‘you have to put that behind you.’ You had to, in a game like this, stay composed and find a way to convert and go down and score. In the end, we found a way to win.”

Despite the loss of center Dirk Nowitziki due to an injury, the Dallas Mavericks beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 103-93 on Monday. Nowitziki scored 13 points before leaving the game in the second quarter with a sore right knee. Forward Caron Butler picked up the slack with his 21 points, while Jason Terry contributed seven straight points in the fourth quarter.

This Year’s Playoff Teams Emerging

Last night’s football games made some final decisions regarding this year’s playoffs. The Green Bay Packers crushed the Giants 45-17, with quarterback Aaron Rodgers passing 404 yards and four touchdowns, while Eli Manning of New York threw four interceptions. The Packers can ensure a playoff spot if they beat Chicago next week, while the Giants will need a win over Washington and some help from other teams.

The New England Patriots swept the Buffalo Bills 34-3, wrapping up the AFC East and securing home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

The Baltimore Ravens beat the Browns 20-10 in an away game, with two touchdowns by Joe Flacco, two interceptions by Ed Reed and a tough defense that held Cleveland’s Peyton Hillis to only 35 yards on twelve carries.

The New York Jets lost 38-34 against the Chicago Bears, who already have a spot in the postseason games. However, their wildcard rivals the Jacksonville jaguars lost 20-17 in overtime to the Washington Redskins. The Jags now have a slim chance at making the playoffs; they need to win at Houston, while the Colts, who beat the Raiders 31-26, lose at home to the Titans.

The KC Chiefs had a 34-14 win over Tennessee , securing their first AFC West title since 2003.

The Eagle’s game was postponed due to weather conditions, but their NFC East spot was secured when the Giants lost.

The Heat Burns Past The Lakers; Pittsburgh Steelers Maintain Top Spot in AFC North

Kobe-BryantThe Miami Heat dominated the Los Angeles Lakers yesterday, ending the game with a 96-80 victory. LeBron James scored 27 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, while Chris Bosh added 24 points and 13 rebounds to the count. This is the second consecutive bad game for the Lakers, who lost 98-79 to Milwaukee on Tuesday. After the game, Kobe Bryant told reporters “I don’t care if we lose by twenty or by one- I just don’t like to lose. I’m just upset with how we’re playing. These games mean more to our opponents than they do to us and we need to correct that.”

The Pittsburgh steelers solidified their possession of the top spot in the AFC North and a first round bye in the playoffs by dominating in a game against the Carolina Panthers. The 27-3 game, along with the Raven’s loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, was all the Steelers could have hoped for. Steeler’s coach Mike Tomlin told reporters “it’s great to be in the clubhouse for the weekend with the necessary win and we can watch others sort themselves out. We were far from perfect, but we were good enough to win tonight.” When asked about their upcoming game against the Browns he said “that’s not going to be easy going to Cleveland, but we’ll be prepared for that. It was good to get a win and move forward.”

The Bulls Rising in Eastern Conference; Red Wings End Canucks Winning Streak

The Chicago Bulls continue to rise in the Eastern Conference. Yesterday, they came out with an 87-80 victory over the Washington Wizards, making that their ninth win in the last ten games. Bulls’ forward Carlos Boozer scored 30 points, as well as ten rebounds and seven assists, while Derrick Rose added 25 of his own.
“I feel like I’m getting better and better every day,” Boozer said, talking about his broken hand. “I’m still not where I want to be but I don’t think I’m too far away.”

The Detroit Red Wings battled the Vancouver Canucks fiercely for a 5-4 victory, strengthening their climb back to the top spot in the Western Conference. The win lifted the Red Wings past the Dallas Stars in the conference, and ended a four-game winning streak for the Canucks. “You look at the standings, everything’s gotten pretty condensed here, so every point matters right now,” Detroit’s goalie Jimmy Howard stated after the game. “We battled hard, we never gave up. We wanted to win this game. It was a great win.”

Lakers Blown Away at Home; Dallas Stars take First Place in Western Conference

Dallas-StarsIn a shockingly humiliating game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday, the Lakers fell from glory with a 98-79 loss at home. In their second game without Jennings, the Bucks’ Earl Boykins scored 22 points, John Salmons added 20, and Ersan Ilyasova 17, improving their team to 11-16. After the game, Milwaukee head coach Scott Skiles said “Each time we appeared to be teetering a little bit, we were able to make a series of big plays to extend the lead. If you’re going to come into this type of place and beat this type of team, you’re going to need those types of plays. We wouldn’t have won the game without Earl tonight.”

The Dallas Stars claimed sole possession of first place in the Western Conference as a result of their 5-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens. The Stars quickly gained a 3-0 lead with goals by Adam Burish and Jamie Benn in the first period, and one from Karlis Skrastins early in the second. Montreal’s Mathieu Darche had a goal shortly after, midway through the second period, but Richards restored the three-point lead at 17 minutes. Another goal was scored for Montreal by Brian Gionta, but Loui Eriksson sealed the deal for Dallas with his goal one minute later.

Brett Favre returned to the game only to be knocked out again in the second quarter, after slammed head-first into the turf. He did not return to the game, but addressed the reporters after it was over, stating that “that was one of the few times in my career I kind of went blank. I knew it would be my last home game.” He added that he doesn’t regret his decision to play. The Bears’ Devin Hester scored a 64-yard punt return, setting an NFL record of 14 kickoff/punt return TDs. Hester explained that it was all about the team. “They want it as bad as I do. I really love those guys. All the glory goes to them,” he said.

The Dallas Mavericks have ended Miami’s 12-game winning streak with a tight game ending at 98-96. Mavericks’ Jason Terry scored all 19 of his game points in the fourth quarter, in consecutive three-pointers. Dirk Nowitzki added 26 points and nine rebounds to Dallas’s score. He shared his take on the game by saying “we mixed up our zone and man-to-man nicely. We just tried to clog the lane as much as we could. They settled for a lot of threes against our zone.”

The New York Islanders’ forward Matt Martin was suspended for two games as a result of his blind-side check to the head of a Phoenix Coyote. He will forfeit nearly $6,800 in salary, and will miss games against Tampa Bay and New Jersey.

Last Night’s Big NFL Games:

Last night, the Philedelphia Eagles shocked, well, everyone, by executing an amazing comeback with a 65-yard touchdown punt return just as time ran out. With eight minutes left in the game, the Giants were up 31-10, and an Eagle victory seemed impossible. But, they played fiercely, scoring 28 points in the last 7 minutes of the game, ending victorious over New York and improving their record to 10-4. Kevin Boss, a tight end on the Giants, expressed the feelings of his entire team when he said “I’m in disbelief right now. I’m in shock.”

The New York Jets managed to pull themselves up following their last two embarrassing games against the Patriots and the Dolphins, by clinching a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers and improving to 10-4. The Jets are following closely behind New England in the AFC East. This week’s win was a result of a major team effort, beginning with a 97-yard kickoff return, and ending with a tight defense. With nine seconds left, the Steeler’s QB Ben Roethlisberger had two narrow chances at a winning touchdown, but the Jets would not be defeated. The game ended at 22-17.

Meanwhile, the New England Patriots maintained their spot at the top of AFC East during a game against Green Bay. The final score of 31-27 was surprisingly close, though. “It certainly wasn’t one of our better games. We made enough plays to win. We have to play a lot better or our season won’t last much longer,” Bill Belichick, New England’s coach, told reporters after the game. The Patriots were pressured by the Packers during the first half, but the game turned when, an offensive lineman, ran a kickoff back for 71 yards. Brady said he’s “never seen anything happen so slow in my life. It was an unbelievable play. I would never imagine anything like that would happen. And it was a big play in the game.” Connolly weighs 313 pounds.

James had 32 points, while Wade and Bosh followed close behind with each scoring 26 points of their own. “When we play defense we’re a really dangerous team. Bulls Lose Noah Due to Injury; Hall of Famer Bob Feller Dies

Joakim NoahThe Chicago Bulls swept the Toronto Raptors in a 110-93 game on Wednesday for their seventh consecutive victory, but at a cost. Their center Joakim Noah will be off the court for the next two months. He began the game with a sprained thumb, and appeared to be doing just fine, scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds. After the game, however, he admitted that he had torn a ligament and would require surgery.

“It’s tough not playing at a high level,” he told reporters. It’s hurting… I can’t practice. I have to get right and get back to this team. I’m going to miss playing. It’s frustrating because I feel we have a chance to be really, really good. I know that in the long run this is what needs to be done.” He added that the goal is to get the surgery done now, so he will be fit for the playoffs.

The best strikeout pitcher in baseball passed away at age 92 from leukemia on Wednesday. Robert Feller, or “Rapid Robert”, formerly of the Cleveland Indians, had a fastball that went over 100 miles per hour. Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said that he is “saddened by the loss of the Hall of Famer Bob Feller, truly one of the game’s all-time great pitchers.” He added that “Bob was one of the first major leaguers to enlist following Pearl Harbor and served our country for nearly four years during the prime of his career. Bob Feller was a great pitcher, but he was first and foremost a great American.”
